Recently, my husband wrote and directed a Gujarati stage play, on the lives of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. To portray, biography of an epic-like personality, mammoth research was conducted. I, too digged myself in absorbing information about this grand personality.
And,
I must say, I am truly sanctified..
He was the ardent Congress leader of the pre-independence era and became the first Hon. Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of independent India. A committed Congressman, for his entire life..
He was the person, who had understood the principal of Secularism to its fullest, which Congress of today, claims to be based on. Secularism, to him was not appeasing any one party or group but working ceaselessly, for the welfare of the society, giving no preference to any one religion over other.
Mahatma Gandhi’s belief of secular justice, was acknowledged and implemented, in its true flavor, a step ahead than Gandhiji himself, by Sardar.
Sardar in his speech at Hajira, had proclaimed, that he was neither a Hindu, nor a Patel, but he was only a dedicated Bharatiya [Indian]...
But,
These words did not, by any which way, meant that he favored Muslims. He was strictly against the word, ‘ appeasement’, and was dead against settling the refugees from Kashmir and Pakistan, on the bases of religion, fearing such appeasement would eventually result into communal tensions.
Anything that was preferable for welfare and security of people of this nation, he implemented it, no matter, with whoever he had to argue. Jinnah had demanded a kilometer long passage passing from the center of our newly formed country and Mahatma Gandhi, was of opinion about considering it, stating it would be of convenience for Jinnah, to run the East and West Pakistan efficiently and thus, the Indian Govt. must consider about giving it, in order to maintain cordial relations with the neighbor, a brother, who had just separated.. Sardar, ruthlessly denied such demands as it was against the security of our nation and its people. Sardar, did not hesitate to negate the appeal by Mahatma himself, whom he considered respectable and his own mentor, philosopher and guide!!! His motto, was not to offer the society, what they wish to have but to work endlessly, for what is good for them..
And,
He did it incessantly...
Sardar, who hailed from very humble background of a small peasant family and had toiled to give a decent lifestyle to his family, was completely involved in his career and maintaining high standard of living. He charged, an enormous fee of Rs. 12 !!! in 1917.. and indulged in playing bridge, smoking etc.
But,
After involving himself in the freedom struggle in 1917, after a meeting with Mahatma Gandhi, he completely devoted himself to the well-being of society. He started his political career, with becoming a councilor in Ahmedabad Municipality and provoked titanic changes.
His name was projected to be the first prime minister of independent India, by 12 regional govt.s, out of 15, but he let it pass on the status to Shri Nehru, on insistence of Mahatma.
Yet,
He remained a simple soul throughout his life.. A gigantic personality, to whom we, the people of independent India, are enormously debted, for the map of our nation. The boundaries that give us security of residing within the oneness of a country. He toiled to abolish small kingdoms and their autocratic rule. Every kingdom, within the boundary of motherland, was compelled to be part and parcel of Bharat.
Such, massive was his contribution, to Congress and our nation, he could have effortlessly cosseted in promoting his son, Dahyabhai, either politically or professionally..
But,
This truthful man, preferred to keep him away and struggled on his own. Dahyabhai was an insurance agent and Sardar fired him, if he tried to gain business using his father’s name.
That was one Congressman and look at the current lot..
The legend, who served the motherland, devotionally did not leave any legacy, for his heirs, to be pampered and followed, most unlike his collegue!!!
And,
On the day, he passed away...
All that he owned, was a single pair of clothes, that he was wearing!!! He had donated his few pairs of clothes, his watch that he was using since last 20 years and few other belongings to Kasturba Sewashram, that his daughter Maniben took care of.
Little before his death, he solicited Maniben, to personally deliver Rs. 30,000 in cash, belonging to Govt. of India and obtain receipt for the same!!! Every penny that belonged to the Govt. was people’s money, in his eyes.
Today, the scenario is completely roller coasted. The Congress ethics, that Sardar followed and the principals he lived for have been totally twisted. Nepotism has been deep rooted in Congi-culture. Striking over the nation’s treasury is as common as chips and chalk.
And,
The simple living has been long forgotten word. Scams and more scams are part of Congress-men’s lives. Today, after 60 long years, we miss Sardar the most. His iron conduct and committed patriotism has been inspirational for the coming generations.
But,
Sadly, the Congress men have deserted Sardar and his principals, completely.
They are indulging in favoritism, worshipping legacy culture and creating scandals..
And,
Sardar’s soul must be watching the ruckus being created, by the party that he built with his blood..
And,
Shading tears..
Tears of blood!!!
We, the people of this grand country, have one question, on our lips..
Will we get, another Sardar, ever...???
